Wedding dress necklines: which one suits you?

By Cloe Pan, Stylist ·

The neckline frames your face and shoulders in every photo, so it's worth choosing deliberately. Sweetheart and strapless necklines are classic and romantic; V-necks lengthen the torso; off-the-shoulder and square necklines show the collarbones; halters highlight the shoulders; and high and illusion necklines feel elegant and modern. Pick the one that suits your shoulders, the support you want and your jewelry.

The common necklines

  • Sweetheart — a curved, heart-shaped top edge. Romantic and flattering on most busts.
  • Strapless — a straight or gently curved edge with no straps. Clean and versatile; needs a well-fitted bodice for support.
  • V-neck — a V that can be shallow or plunging. Lengthens the neck and torso.
  • Off-the-shoulder — sits below the shoulders, showing the collarbones. Soft and elegant.
  • Square — a straight, structured line across the chest. Modern with a vintage note.
  • Halter — straps that wrap around the neck, leaving the shoulders bare. Shows toned shoulders and arms.
  • High neck and illusion — a high or sheer neckline, often in lace. Refined and modest.

Choosing for your shape

Broad shoulders are softened by V-necks and sweethearts; narrow shoulders are widened by off-the-shoulder and square necklines. If you want more support, look for structured bodices, straps or a halter. A shorter neck looks longer with a V; a long neck is beautifully framed by a high neckline.

Necklines and jewelry

Strapless, sweetheart and off-the-shoulder gowns leave room for a statement necklace or earrings. V-necks pair well with a pendant. High and illusion necklines usually look best with earrings alone, letting the dress do the work.

Can a neckline be changed?

Often, yes — within limits. A tailor can add straps or sleeves, raise a plunging V slightly with sheer mesh, or adjust how a bodice sits. Major changes depend on how the dress is built, so ask at your first fitting.
