How to choose a wedding dress for your body type

By Cloe Pan, Stylist ·

Choose a wedding dress that balances your proportions and defines your waist. Hourglass figures suit fitted mermaid and trumpet shapes; pear shapes suit A-lines and ball gowns that skim the hips; apple shapes suit empire waists and structured bodices; athletic figures suit sweetheart necklines and fuller skirts that add curves; and petite brides suit long, unbroken lines. Then trust how you feel — a stylist can often spot a style you'd never pick yourself.

A starting point for each figure

  • Hourglass — mermaid, trumpet and fitted sheath dresses follow your curves.
  • Pear (fuller hips) — A-line and ball gown skirts skim the hips; draw the eye up with an interesting neckline.
  • Apple (fuller middle) — empire waists, structured or ruched bodices and V-necks create shape.
  • Athletic (straight) — sweetheart necklines, corseted bodices and fuller skirts add curves.
  • Petite — sheath, column and soft A-line dresses with a defined waist lengthen the line.
  • Tall — ball gowns, dramatic trains and bold details carry beautifully.

Fit matters more than rules

These are starting points, not rules. Two brides with the same measurements can love completely different dresses. What makes any gown flattering is how it fits: where the waist sits, how the bodice supports you, and a hem set to your shoes. That's why alterations are part of choosing a dress, not an afterthought.

Try something you wouldn't pick

Many brides end up choosing a silhouette they would have walked past on the rack. A good stylist reads your figure, your venue and your style, then pulls a few dresses outside your comfort zone. Try at least one of each main silhouette — you may discover a different side of yourself.

Comfort counts too

You'll wear the dress for many hours. Sit, walk and lift your arms at the fitting. Structured bodices give support without straps; softer fabrics move more easily. If you love a dress but want more support or coverage, ask what the tailor can add.

Questions, answered

What wedding dress is most flattering for every body type?
A-line is the most universally flattering: it defines the waist and skims the hips. But the most flattering dress is the one that's tailored to fit you.
What wedding dress hides a tummy?
Empire waists, ruched or structured bodices and A-line skirts that flow from a defined point create a smooth line through the middle.
Can a stylist help me choose a dress for my body type?
Yes. At Lichée Bridal, your stylist pulls gowns for your figure, style and venue at a private one-on-one fitting — often including one you wouldn't have chosen yourself.
